Today I Ate Off of and Drank Out of Fine China.

Tony and I were married in '07.  That year, on my birthday, he bought me a china set that I had really wanted.  An 8 place set.  8 bowls, salad plates, dinner plates, tea cups, saucers, and 1 big serving bowl, platter, creamer, and sugar bowl.  A super nice set that I adored!  Still do.

I can remember using it once.  It was for an Easter brunch we had with two other couples.  The day after that brunch I got morning sickness for the first time in my life.  My first trimester with Ash was hard.  We moved during my second trimester and those china pieces have been nestles in a storage container ever since.

Today was the first time that I've used my china set in over four years!

I actually decided that not only would I get it out and serve my kids breakfast on it, I decided to donate and/or sell every other cup, plate, and bowl that we own (aside from the children-sized dishes we have).

I have wasted 5 years with my set.  It was never displayed and only used once.  I realized that it makes no sense to have so many dishes and keep saving the ones I like best for a special occasion that never happens.  Holidays come and go, and I either use disposable stuff or our everyday mismatched stuff.  Why?  We're supposed to treat each moment with our loved ones as special.  So - I'm doing that with my china, from now on.

And, yes, I am letting my kids use my china too.  It's just STUFF.  And stuff can be replaced.  Skipping the feeling of eating everyday food on special day china?  Surrounding myself with a couple of pretty things that make me smile (instead of a lot of substandard items)? That can be missed, which is sad.  I'm not going skip out on another one of those moments!

I had some mint hot chocolate tonight.  Mmmmmmm.  And yes, it DID taste better in my beautiful tea cup!  :)

Thanks for the reminder. I never use mine either. What a waste. I even have Christmas china and forgot I had it until the day before Christmas. Darn. At least they got used a few times. :) Come over to my house and I will make something yummy for us and serve it on my pretties. :)

I like the way you think! I too think you should use your fancy china, thats what its for after all. I don't have china just my every day plates and things so if you have it, then by all means use it!!

I have a set of dishes I love, but like you.... never use them. I need to start.

Yes, I agree that you should use them and not just keep them hidden away. Enjoy your drink in your beautiful tea cup! :)

I read something recently that stated something to the effect of "don't wait for that special day, everyday is special". It is so true! I have special china too! That I really wanted. I've used it for no reason at all just because I wanted to feel fancy, lol. But this post is a great reminder that truthfully it is all just STUFF! And that I should bring it out a lot more than I do now :).

I think you have the right idea! You may as well use the special dishes! Otherwise they are just sitting there in boxes.

I've found myself getting more and more plates and cups. The reason: I think my dish set has too big of plates. All of them do really. When I see cute small plates on clearance I get them. It makes our proportion sizes smaller, which is just what I like. Also, since the boys drop stuff less I'm trying to get ceramic and glass to eat and drink on. BPA free! They drink more, so I got them fun superhero glasses for Christmas at Target. They love them!

Good for you. I used my china set last year and I loved that I did that. It was my first time using it. Like you it's been put away for years.
